Real Madrid were booed off as they slumped to a shock 2-0 defeat at home to Celta Vigo in a match they ended with nine men.

Celta were in the bottom-half of La Liga ahead of their trip to the Bernabeu on Sunday night and without a league win over Real Madrid in 22 games.

But Williot Swedberg’s second-half brace sealed Celta’s first victory over Madrid since May 2014 and increased the pressure on manager Alonso.

Real Madrid have now won just one of their last five league games and will slip to third in La Liga if Villarreal win their game in hand.

On a galling night for Real Madrid and Alonso, they lost Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras to red cards as the hosts imploded at the Bernabeu.

Much was expected of Alonso after the former Real Madrid midfielder was appointed as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement over the summer.

The Liverpool hero had spent three years in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, leading the German club to a rare Bundesliga title in 2023-24.

Real Madrid made a bright start to the season but Los Blancos have won just two of their last seven games in all competitions, slipping four points behind La Liga leaders and arch-rivals Barcelona.

A disappointing defeat to Celta Vigo did not come at the best possible time as Alonso revealed earlier in the week that he had held talks with club president Florentino Perez about the club’s dip in form.

Real Madrid’s stuttering form will once again be put under the spotlight on Wednesday night when they welcome Premier League giants Manchester City to the Bernabeu.

Spanish outlet AS say that Champions League clash is seen as a ‘crucial test’ for Real Madrid and Alonso as they do not expect the shock Celta Vigo loss to affect his ‘immediate future’ in the job.

Speaking to the press after the Celta defeat, Alonso said: ‘We are all angry, evidently this was not the game we wanted, it was not the result we wanted.

‘We have to try and turn the page as quickly as possible. It’s only three points.

‘We have the Champions League game against City to react in, and get this bad taste out of our mouths.’

Asked if his job was on the line ahead of Real Madrid’s clash with Man City, Alonso added: ‘We’re playing for three Champions League points, that’s it.

‘We’re in a good position [in the Champions League], that’s what’s at stake. We want to perform well and play better than we did today.

‘We are all united, knowing that this is football, of course. We have to look forward. The demand we know what it is, the defeats hurt a lot, but you have to look forward.

‘It is the responsibility of all of this, together we must assume to do things well. We know that the points that go are important, but not decisive.’

Manchester City warmed up for their Champions League encounter with Real Madrid by beating Sunderland 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Three successive league wins has seen Pep Guardiola’s side climb to second in the Premier League, just two points behind leaders Arsenal.

Man City lost 6-3 on aggregate to Real Madrid in last season’s Champions League and Guardiola hopes his team ‘play like who we are’ this time around.

‘It’s never an easy place,’ former Barcelona manager Guardiola said.

‘We missed an opportunity against Leverkusen to be close but we are going to do our game and we have three options to get the points we need to go there [the knockout phase].

‘It’s another competition. Hopefully we can play like we are. Always I wish when you go to play on the big stages is play like who we are.’
