Jamie Carragher put Peter Schmeichel on the spot during CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage with a question about Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes.
A number of pundits identified Chelsea as dark horses in the title race before the season started after they won the Club World Cup over the summer.
Chelsea had a mixed 2024-25 campaign but ended up in a strong position after qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Europa Conference League.
The optimism that was building over the summer has quickly disappeared, however, with Enzo Maresca’s side only winning two of their first six league games.
Chelsea have only taken one point from their last two games, suffering back-to-back defeats to Manchester United and Brighton before Tuesday’s Champions League win over Benfica.

Having slipped seven points behind defending champions and early pacesetters Liverpool, it already looks doubtful that Chelsea will battle Arne Slot’s side or second-placed Arsenal for the title.
Carragher has been consistent in his belief that titles will continue to evade Chelsea until they sign an upgrade on current No. 1 Robert Sanchez.

The west Londoners have spent hundreds of millions on new signings over the past few years but still rely on Sanchez, who they signed from Brighton in 2023.
Sanchez has made a number of high-profile mistakes in the Chelsea goal and was sent off just five minutes into the recent defeat to Man United.
Carragher was keen to hear Premier League legend Schmeichel’s take on the goalkeeper situation at Stamford Bridge but could not have disagreed more with his response.
‘Peter, you famously signed for Manchester United and were a big difference to them going on to win the Premier League,’ Carragher said on CBS Sports.
‘Do you think Chelsea can win the league with Robert Sanchez in goal?’
After a brief pause, Schmeichel responded: ‘Erm yes, and better defenders.’
But Carragher immediately interjected, saying: ‘No chance Peter, no chance!’
After the show’s host Kate Abdo said goodbye to Schmeichel, who was at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea’s win over Benfica, former Manchester City defender Micah Richards told Carragher: ‘You put him on the spot there, didn’t you? He didn’t say it with conviction did he!’

In a recent column for The Telegraph, Liverpool legend Carragher slammed Chelsea’s decision not to replace Sanchez during the summer transfer window.
‘The glaring flaws last season were in goal and at centre-half,’ he said. ‘Despite 12 new arrivals over the summer, those areas remain the Achilles’ heel.
‘Chelsea were linked with AC Milan’s French keeper Mike Maignan, but the message was they were not prepared to pay more than £12m. Why not?
‘Manchester City showed what ambitious clubs do when an obvious issue needs sorting out, signing Gianluigi Donnarumma.
‘Why were Chelsea not part of the conversation for the PSG keeper? He could have been a transformative signing for them.
‘Rather than focus on positions in need of urgent attention, Chelsea appear to be obsessed with collecting wingers.’
Chelsea will look to clinch their first Premier League win in over a month this weekend when Premier League champions Liverpool visit Stamford Bridge.
