Crystal Palace won the Community Shield by beating Liverpool 3–2 in a penalty shootout after a 2–2 draw in normal time.
This is Palace’s first Community Shield title, marking an impressive start to the season for the team.
Despite showing an attractive attacking game, Liverpool failed.
The match, which took place at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday evening, was fierce, with both teams exchanging goals.
Liverpool took an early lead in the fourth minute through new striker Hugo Ekitike.
After receiving a pass from Florian Wirtz, Ekitike unleashed a low shot that found the top corner of Palace’s net.
Palace equalised in the 17^(th) minute with a penalty from Jean-Philippe Mateta, awarded after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr in the box.
Liverpool retook the lead in the 21st minute with a stunning goal from full-back Jeremie Frimpong.
His lofted pass from the right flank found the Palace goal, leaving goalkeeper Dean Henderson unable to save it. Liverpool held the score at 2-1 at half-time.
In the second half, Liverpool continued to press. Ekitike almost scored his second goal, but his header from Milos Kerkez’s pass went wide.
Palace didn’t sit back. Their counter-attacks troubled the Liverpool defence, with Ismaila Sarr creating a golden opportunity that went wide of the post.
Palace equalised in the 77th minute, thanks to Sarr’s goal. Adam Wharton tapped it in following a quick counter-attack after Will Hughes stole the ball from Cody Gakpo.
The score remained level at the final whistle, forcing the match to go to penalties. The penalty shootout proved decisive in Palace’s victory.
Palace’s penalty takers, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Ismaila Sarr and Justin Devenny, all scored, while Eberechi Eze and Borna Sosa missed.
Of the Liverpool players, only Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai scored, while Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott failed.
