Bayern Munich play Benfica today in the final matchday of Group C at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, and many may wonder why Harry Kane is starting the game on the bench.
The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 continues its course with eventful slates of games. On Tuesday, Bayern Munich and Benfica clash in an exciting showdown to conclude Group C. But this time, Harry Kane won’t play from the get-go.
The English superstar doesn’t have any reported injury, so Kane’s absence in Bayern‘s starting eleven against Benfica today might have to do with a decision from head coach Vincent Kompany to give his striker much-needed rest.
With the German side already qualified for the round of 16, giving him more workload doesn’t make sense. Still, chances are that Kane comes off the bench at some point later in the game.
Harry Kane’s eventful start to the Club World Cup with Bayern
Kane, 31, started in Bayern’s first two group stage games at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. While Vincent Kompany subbed him off 61 minutes into the debut against Auckland City, with Bayern already winning comfortably, Kane played the full 90 minutes in the hard-fought, 2-1 win over Boca Juniors on Matchday 2.

Even though Bayern put 10 past Auckland City in the group stage opener, Kane somehow failed to find the net. However, the former Tottenham Hotspur captain did score against the Argentine side, helping Bayern seal a round of 16 berth.
Bayern’s lineup against Benfica, without Kane
Bayern’s starting lineup against Benfica features many notable absentees. Apart from Kane, the likes of Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, Kingsley Coman, and Michael Olise are also on the bench.
