Liverpool Ready to Release Darwin Nunez, Eye Alexander Isak as Replacement

Having spent up to £185 million in just one month — making the 2025 summer transfer market the most expensive in the club’s history — Liverpool are now choosing to remain calm while observing market developments.

The Reds’ focus is shifting towards potential exits, with players such as Darwin Núñez, Andy Robertson and even Harvey Elliott having their futures questioned.

One of the players generating the most interest is Nunez. The Uruguayan striker is reportedly on the radar of Serie A champions Napoli, who are said to be preparing a formal offer.

Nunez had previously been of interest to Saudi Arabian clubs in January. However, Liverpool rejected the offer because the then-manager, Arne Slot, wanted to maintain full strength in order to chase the 20th Premier League title, which the team eventually achieved.

Despite not being a regular starter — he has only started once in the Premier League this year — keeping Nunez has proven to be the right decision. However, he has contributed less since the beginning of March, with his last goal coming against Southampton. With Diogo Jota out injured, Luis Diaz has been relied on more often as the spearhead.

Now, the parting of ways with Nunez is considered to be just a matter of time. One question mark remains over how much money Napoli is willing to spend and when they will make their move. Núñez himself is said to be interested in working under coach Antonio Conte in Naples.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are not believed to be in a hurry to replace Núñez, given his less dominant role last season if the transfer goes through. The same applies to Jarell Quansah’s potential £35m sale to Bayer Leverkusen, which is expected to be finalised after the Euro U-21s tournament this weekend.

However, Liverpool are still open to the possibility of signing a top striker, with Alexander Isak from Newcastle United being the current favourite.

The Swedish forward was in superb form last season, scoring 23 goals as Newcastle won their first domestic trophy in 70 years. Newcastle were keen to extend Isak’s contract, which still has three years left on it, and increase his wages to bring them in line with those of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon.

However, negotiations over Isak’s new contract have yet to be finalised. With a salary structure that is now one of the largest in the world — GBP 386.1 million last season, estimated to reach GBP 400 million this season — Liverpool are believed to have no trouble making an attractive offer if the opportunity to sign Isak arises.

Moreover, Liverpool has just spent GBP 116 million to sign Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen, having previously only spent around GBP 12 million in the last two years. The sale of players such as Kelleher, Van den Berg, Carvalho and Alexander-Arnold has contributed around £75 million to the club’s coffers.

Now, everything depends on the situation at Newcastle, which is in turmoil following the resignations of CEO Darren Eales and sporting director Paul Mitchell. Liverpool will continue to monitor the situation, particularly in light of the upcoming update to the Profit and Sustainability regulations next month.
