Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was "amazed" by referee Chris Kavanagh's decision to give midfielder Declan Rice a red card for an incident involving him and Brighton defender Joe Vetlman.
In a free kick in the 49th minute awarded to Brighton, Joe Vetlman, who was the executioner, released a quick kick but hit Rice who accidentally blocked the direction of the ball.
"I feel amazed. Amazed and amazed because of how inconsistent the decisions are. In the first half, there were two incidents and nothing happened. Then, in a non-critical area, the ball hits Declan, he turns, doesn't see the player coming and touches the ball," Mikel Arteta was quoted as saying on the Arsenal website, Saturday.
"Legally, he can make that call, but legally he needs to make the next call which is a red card. So we play 10 against 11. It amazes me, at this level," added the Spanish coach.
Rice, who had received a yellow card earlier, was considered by referee Chris Kavanagh to have committed a violation for obstructing Joe Vetlamn. Without looking at the replay, Kavanagh immediately took a second yellow card and gave Rice a red card.
As hosts, The Gunners were finally only able to secure one point after Brighton managed to hold a 1-1 draw in the match which took place at the Emirates Stadium, London, Saturday.
Arsenal actually took the lead first through Kai Havertz's goal in the 38th minute, but in the second half Joao Pedro was able to equalize the score in the 58th minute.
"It was a very emotional afternoon, for sure. We started the game very well, created three or four chances that we didn't convert into goals. After that we had a period with some problems, especially with the ball and we didn't have dominance in that period," said Arteta.
