Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni responded to the news that Lionel Messi will retire after the 2024 Copa America final.
After leading Argentina to the final after beating Canada 2-0, Messi hinted that he would retire. Messi said that he was currently in his 'last battle' with Argentina.
Messi also said that he is one of the 'old men' in the current Argentina squad.
Scaloni stressed that whatever happens in the future, he will not try to influence Messi's decision.
Scaloni hopes Messi will still be with Argentina. He said he has given Messi an open invitation to stay with the team, whether he retires or not.
"We'll see if we convince him or not, but for now, let him play. We're not closing the door. He can be with us even after he retires," Scaloni said.
Argentina is currently just a stone's throw away from retaining its Copa America title. This achievement would certainly be a sweet farewell gift if Messi really decides to retire from the national team.
What is certain is that the championship title will be a beautiful farewell gift for Angel Di Maria who has announced that he will retire from the Argentine national team.
